The HORCSCT is affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) and is based in Shariati Hospital, Tehran, Iran. As a main national hematology-oncology center, it is among the most prominent stem cell transplantation centers in the world. The pediatric stem cell transplant program is a joint program with the adult stem cell transplant program at TUMS. The pediatric stem cell transplant service has extensive experience in stem cell transplants for children of all ages — from infancy through young adulthood. This life-saving treatment is used for some patients with blood diseases, certain types of cancer, immune system disorders or genetic diseases. The pediatric transplant program performs approximately 110 transplants a year. Specifically, our program trains physicians in indications for transplant, pre-transplant patient evaluation, identification and selection of stem cell sources, use of donor registries, methodologies of HLA typing, marrow cryopreservation, administration of high-dose chemotherapy, management of neutropenic fever, management of bacterial/viral/fungal diseases in immunocompromised patients, diagnosis and management of acute and chronic GVHD ,diagnosis and management of regimen related toxicities including veno-occlusive disease of the liver, hemorrhagic cystitis and late complications of stem cell transplantation. Fellows will participate in both inpatient and outpatient care settings, and are expected to become involved with some aspect of clinical research. Broadening the fellow’s experience are weekly rounds and conferences attended by members of the pediatric as well as adult stem cell transplant services. The center has an active cell therapy program which complements the transplant program.
